Possibly (not enough of it visible to tell) the corrosion was due to moisture in the bearing.  Most often this happens
from the lubricant in the bearing having leaked out.  It is important to keep the bearing full of oil, using the fill port
on top.  This is necessary to prevent air in the bearing.  If oil excludes all air, there will be no oxidation.

For now, don't bother with the portions of the bearing that do not run in the bushes; it doesn't matter what those look like.
Concentrate your efforts where they will matter.  You may have to run a thicker grade of oil once you are done.  I can't
see exactly where that might be, as the photo of the spindle doesn't show the whole thing.

Wow,  never seen one like that!

If its still loose with thicker oil,  isn't there a member here getting bearings Nitride coated?

Maybe he'll pop up and advice?

Hi Guys

Quick update ive managed to get another bearing for my 401 so i just need to get my motor spring kit then i can start my rebuild. At present im thinking of using a ikiea lack table as a plinth (cut down at the back) the lacks are solid chipboard until i get some more spare funds.

John

Ps. Mark im sorry to see you are selling your 401 it must have taken you ages to build that plinth.

I would check on the Lack table as I think they are made from a sandwich of wood with wavy bits making up the centre section and aren't that strong which is why the Linn LP12 and other suspension type decks users like them.

I have an old 401 wooden plinth up in the loft which you are welcome to,

If your going to Ikea,  get the worktop saver,  they make great plinths.  I'd have thought much better than chipboard.

No problem copying mine off ebay if your happy with a jigsaw.

You can mod the arm mounting it on the lower layer,  sound's pretty good to me  grin

Green twist is pretty special for me,  but I've got another 401 with 2 arms on it.  Its more practical and the 301 sits atop the rack at the moment  angel  If it finds a good home,  I may add number 3 from  the list of 4 grin

John, I think Ikea Lack tables are mostly air. Some sort of honeycomb structure with a layer of chipboard at the outside edge.
Google images for "lack table cut open".
Doesn't mean it can't be worked with.

Hi Everyone,

thought i would give you all an update on my 401 i damaged the venner on the plinth so i decided to fill it with some spare wood i had laying around, and fitted new feet (although i'm struggling to find something to keep them falling off  cry) i've serviced the motor and the damaged bearing too, I'm waiting for new chassis isolation grommets and the rest of the springs i need ('ive already fitted new motor springs)  anyway heres a picture

Hi John

Looking good ......so do you like the 401 ? i'm guessing that a good service and a decent plinth has made a big difference to the sound ?

Hiya Paul,

i was gonna email you this weekend to see how you was  grin

Paul i really like the 401 its now become my everyday deck. filling the plinth with wood and fitting metal spikes made a huge difference even Sara noticed it  wink the bass was alot better more "solid" if that makes sense? and its sounding so much better now. i still need to get my ortofon 2mblack but thats a after xmass purchase.

take care

Intersting Jo, but what does it have to do with a 401?
