Right, here's where I show my idiocy.

I've just picked up a cheap CD player from a car boot that uses a TDA1541A dac and a CDM4 mech. I've got a spare all metal CDM1 mech kicking around. If I unclip the ribbon and plug in the cmd1 will I get a giant killing CD player or just lots of Smoke?

Hi Alex,

well, if you're an idiot, you're one of many, because I certainly haven't got a clue  embarrassed laugh

However, if you're up for a bit of soldering iron work, then you MUST try converting that player to non-oversampling! Let me know if that's your kind of thing & I'll dig out the details. It's really very simple (and very cheap - free, actually) to do.

Does the original mech actually work?

Hi Alex-
That's a difficult question, the transports occasionally changed in very small ways.  The servo boards which control the laser reading mechanism were analog earlier, and digital later.  Those styles often are not compatible, and I'm checking to find out the age difference between your CDM1 and CDM4.

Are the plugs the same?  Also, I can't remember if the bolt pattern for the bridge is the same.
You could try it, but I'm not entirely positive it would not cause problems so I haven't answered you yet.

Thanks for the replies. I think that swapping the mechs might be dead in the water as I've just dug the cdm1 mech out from the loft and I think it has different ribbon connectors to the cdm4. Although if anyone thinks differently please let me know, I'm desperate to use that CDM1 for something useful.

However, I've not given up on the Phillips cd player. I've just hooked it up to my hifi and I'm very impressed by the sounds it's making. I can see why some people refer to the TDA1541A as very "analogue" sounding. So Nigel I'm certainly up for a bit of modding. The CD player only stands me at £4 from the car boot so I've not much to lose.

thanks again,

Alex

What you need to get hold of is the schematics of the two ribbon connectors and then you can build your own ribbon connector.

Please let me build a system that is a bit forgiving on what I find in thrift shops for a handful of pennies and still is able to deliver the goods on good pressings.

Hi Alex,

I have a TD1541 player with CDM4 mech. A Rotel RCD855 that I really like. There are different versions of the CDM4 but I found it easy to work on and remove.

Nigel,

I'd be interested in details of the NOS mods too if thats ok. I have only done a couple of very basic mods. IIRC I have removed the output caps and upgraded the NEC5542 (?) to LM4562HA
