Hi all,
Sometimes I see pictures of original Lenco rubber mats in like new condition. I'm wondering, how can you get your old 40+ year old mat in such a good condition? What to use and most important, what doesn't stain your records?

i just put mine in the dishwasher with the dishes (powerball type detergent) and it came out lovely. clean and matt. grips the record and doesnt exude anything. when it went in it was a bit shiny, dusty and old looking. came out looking new. the gl78 mat only touches the very edge of the lp with a rounded profile, probably to give a good grip without too much coupling to the platter. i like it. i did another old one, a colton antistimat, did the same. the last part of the cycle steams the dishes, so it got a bit of gentle cooking, but no damage done.

I scrub them with laundry detergent and a hard bristle brush. Get both sides, scrape off any hard splatters with a knife or small screwdriver, then re scrub with detergent. Rinse well.
I've been amazed at how many mats I was going to throw away which were saved with this method.

In my experience the plastic/vinyl cleaners for cars leave a film of residue: bad enough in a car; even worse for records.

ask the i-net, after this i found this: The cleaning of rubber products can be done with soap and warm water. The purified product should be dried at room temperature. After prolonged storage (6 to 8 months) the products with a 1.5% sodium carbonate solution can be cleaned. The remains of the cleaning fluid should be rinsed with water.

The first step is to wash the mat with dishwasher, I use Dreft Citron, citron is good to get rid of the nicotine smell. The next step is with CarPro PERL, rub it in and let dry for 24 hours, after drying for the second time with Carpro PERL and let dry for a following 24 hours, then clean it with dishwasher to get rid of of the residu.

I tried the soap & water recipe, but the result on my ribbed mat was awful, once dried it looked like it was a 50 years older Today I went back to my initial plan: wiped it clean with baby skin milk cream and for good measure finished it with a light wipe of pure pharmaceutical glycerin. Let it sink in to dry for a little while and the result is very good with a nice smooth touch, a light shine and no residue.

I have similar experiences with soap and water, the mat looking older and worse after than before. Not always though... probably depends on many things like detergent type, mat material and level of dirtiness. The only way I've got some mats in really bad (hard and discoloured) shape looking almost new has been applying that car plastic parts replenisjer afte cleaning the mat. It really does wonders. About residue: it i itially leaves a somewhat sticky layer, but afte a while it seems to disappear completely. I suppose one way to do it might be cleaning the mat with soap and water a day after applying the replenisher spray, if there is any residue left at that point.

No way !! Spiritus-like mixtures will ruin the mat, cause it soak/dry's all of the contents that make the mat so "elastic" .... Clean it with dish-soap (or maybe in the dishwasher) and rinse it under fresh water. Another good suggestion is the use of silicon-based spray ! (After cleaning) You'll see .... a "slipmat" at it's best !!

I usually use Ambersil Foaming Cleanser with a nail brush followed by a rinse in warm water. Works for me.
