Hi Paul

I have not spent much time thinking why it works....I just know it does, and more successfully than the other more conventional  designs I have experimented with.

I cannot join the drivers together for 2 reasons:

1. the pole holding the FR's projects between them.
2. the huge rubber surrounds on the woofers prevents it.

No doubt, if I felt it would be an advantage to seal the woofers together face to face I could make some kind of sealing spacer to do it, but the design works so well I don't feel its necessary

I like the phantom baffle theory  wink

Cheers

Vic

Pavel

I'm sort of surprised. It is only a theory and one that I certainly can't prove but I thought people would fall about laughing (in a polite way of course because people here are actually polite and quite nice).

Well Paul, whether it is a valid theory or not it's a great name.  I think Vic should edit his thread title to include it  laugh

Sort of reminds me of Arthur Koestler's Ghost in the Machine.

I ordered mine off Parts-Express and sucked up the charges. Don't know of any EU distributors, but the final price would probably be similar. Worked out similar with UM18's which I bought from Soundimports. EU price = US price + VAT + Shipping + handling charge  angry

 Hi Vic,
some very interesting reading there, i've always had a thing for open baffle, and bought some Hawthornes a little while ago. Got some really nice seasoned slabs of Oak - windfall from the 1987 hurricane, that i was planning to build them into (once i had finalised the design). Alas, so far life has got in the way as it often does, and i ended up buying some modified speakers with huge boxes of external crossovers, they really do sound very good, but i still have that OB itch to scratch.
I think i saw some of your early iterations for sale on ebay a while back ? would be interested in hearing what you have.

 kind regards,
 Julian

Found these:

http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=BMA5G40Nd_N&browsemode=manufacturer

As I recall, a few years ago Beyma had a unit that was identical to the PRV. It was discontinued. Looks like it was replaced  by the 5G40Nd.

Cheaper here:

Yesterday Malcolm and I made the trek across country to visit Vic and here his "phantom baffles"  Now I've heard some of Vic's earlier OB builds so made assumptions about what these might sound like.  Vic really loves his bass and to be honest I've found his builds a little too strong in this area for my tastes.  So what about these new ones?

 wav

For those who have doubted that baffleless bass can be done Vic's speakers have the tightest, deepest, strongest, cleanest bass I think I've ever heard outside of a live concert.  The settee I was sat on didn't just vibrate, I had to cling on to it to prevent myself ending up on the floor  grin

Not only that but when I asked for something a bit more delicate the bass did not overpower female singers.  To me the absolute stars of the show are those push/pull bass units.  The top end as provided by the little full range drivers is, in my opinion, not as successful, they are a tad strident for my taste but then that is my taste.

Amazing speakers Vic and they absolutely do work!

I agree with all that Ian said, the sound is quite staggering, it is like an audiophile PA system. It gets very near to the sound of a live drumkit and double bass was phenomenal.

The shear amount of power Vic has on tap is scary, at one stage he put on one track, he'll need to say what it was, which was below low, I was sat near one of the speakers and could smell them overheating, he said that track can easily fry them when the wick is turned up.

Vic was a great host, even took us for lunch, and I got to sit on a couple of his recumbent bikes...more food for thought.

Yes the visit has fired a few ideas in my mind...
