Anybody know of a decent but affordable A to D convertor.  This is not to archive records but to connect an analogue output to a DAC.

What is your budget, what do you define as "decent" and do you need balanced inputs?

Scarlett makes very good quality audio interfaces. Software is included. I use one daily.

That's a Focusrite Scarlett, I know someone who worked at Focusrite if you need help Ian.

Alternatively here is a cheap as chips https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Monster-Digital-to-Analog-Analog-To-Digital-Audio-Converter/154318378985?hash=item23ee1797e9:g:PGQAAOSw6Txeprot

Thanks guys.  The Focusrite Scarlett looks like a suitable contender although a little complicated!

May I ask what source you want to send to your dac and what the input on the dac is?

Source is vinyl via a phonostage.  Preferred input would be optical or coax.  This is an experiment so don't want to spend too much, max £100.  I've got a little Beresford UCA202 which is where I'll start but if that works OK I might want to try something a bit better.

I thought as much. I’m selling an A2D converter but it is USB.

Good luck.

Thanks Fergs.  It might be just what I want but as with most of these devices they seemed to be designed to plug into a computer.  Mine will be plugged straight into my Auralic Polaris.  Whether it will understand the output of the HRT or similar is of some concern.

I don’t think it would work for you. It would need an external 5v power supply which isn’t a big deal. Suitable split usb cables are available but I can’t think how you would select the sample rate. Could have been a nice solution otherwise. Cheers

Actually this is wrong, muddled mind.  I've got a new toy on the way which is basically a DAC with a built in Raspberry Pi.  Given that is a computer it should recognise one of these A to D convertors.

Found these which might be a cheap and cheerful way of testing the concept.

Out of interest I emailed High Resolution Technologies (HRT) and put forward using the Linestreamer+ to feed a dac. We shall see what they say.

Thanks Fergus.  The Pro-ject AD Box S2 might actually be a simpler solution but it will be interesting to see what HRT say.

Park Audio Puffin with coax output option might be good but spendy though.

Up until about 10 years ago I used to hear about people using minidisc decks purely as adc's. I guess some care was taken to enable good recordings.
Now, I don't have a minidisc deck and I haven't followed the development of adc's over the years so I don't really know if this is a valid option anymore.
Could be worth doing ang a bit of research though? Look for Sony's top of the line decks. Also portables from the end of the MD era (HiMD) with microphone inputs should have good adc's.
A DAT deck (or probably a DCC deck) could be used in the same way, but they're not as readily available.
