A simple repair for a CD player.

I found this budget CD player in the basement and don't use one very often so I figured it would do. Although it works, the LCD display didn't. On opening the unit up I found that the bulb that lights the liquid crystal numbers had blown.

It's fed by a 13V DC on a regulated circuit, which I snipped off, replacing it with a pair of bright LEDs.

Glued into position behind the LCD, they light the numbers perfectly.

I like CDs. They're like tiny, convenient, shinier, cheaper LPs. And they sound pretty good too

I've just modded a Marantz CD5000 and I'm really enjoying CD's again. For the last hour or so anyway  smiley.

I've enjoyed your digital journey BTW.

Oops - sorry, Billy, I missed this from last year! Thanks and how is your CD5000 sounding? What did you do to it?

I found this pic of someone's modified Philips CD582 (my new player, not the one from the previous post here), but the site I got it from contains no information about the changes. A reverse image search brought up nothing either. Is anyone able to identify what kind of mod it is from the picture? I'm referring to the smaller board on the right and the tiny vertical green board on the main PCB.

Not sure about the tiny green board, but the board on the right looks like a power supply -- my guess would be that they have added dedicated voltage regulators for the main chips.

Looks like one of early mods developed by Lampizator. Each stage/chip got it's own supply.

I'll come back to this. The player developed a fault and yesterday I got my hands on a Philips player that has the same pcb. But...

Several caps changed
A socket to allow opamp "rolling".
Some resistor changes
Muting transistors removed
A resistor joining legs 2 and 3 of the voltage regulator which stabilises the output
A filtered IEC input
Changed to decent RCA outs instead of the cheap board mounted ones
Damped the case and chassis
Unplugged the headphone out from the main board.
Changed to fast switching diodes in the power supply section.

I have the components and sub-miniature tubes that I need to Lampizate it.

Interesting. Where are you getting that info from, Billy, or have you drawn the list up yourself? I could be tempted to try a few of the more straightforward mods to begin with, such as changing the rectification to discrete diodes.

These got me started.

I also downloaded the service manual for the CD5000.

Thanks - I've been reading Nick's DD site for over 20 years and have made versions of many of his projects, but never saw that CD mods page before.

And seeing that Marantz CD5000, I now recognise it - I had one for several years. Nice player.

Yes, even in standard form it sounds really good.
