My mate has Serato, a timecode or Digital Vinyl System (DVS).

He’s got loads of real vinyl as well, but often usually late at night after the pub or some other event he spins it up. Avoids risking damaging his precious Hip Hop originals, as well as affording access to a wider digital selection of music, while retaining the feel of “real” DJing.

At the last “after party” I noted he has original Stanton cartridges and styli on his technics turntables. I questioned whether he was worried about unnecessarily wearing out the Stanton’s as I presume this is just a timecode system, and it shouldn’t matter what cartridge or stylus you use..?

My mate was convinced the sound actually came through the cartridge, so it would affect the sound. I thought he was bonkers, but he seemed very convinced.

It was in the wee hours and a few beers had been imbibed. I am right, surely? Or not?

They're only 500s and cheap kyowa replacements are just as good.  Serato does need a strong signal off the stylus and if the 500s handle well then why not?  He wouldn't want to put expensive pickups on his rig as you're right - the sound doesn't come from them.  They just generate a tone that the computer interprets for dj effects.
