Hi Guys
I have a modified John Tucker Exemplar 2900 with siltech wiring
When I insert a cd the display reads 00h00m00s is this the laser that has stopped working (the disk does spin up but stops and the display has the 00h00m00s)
Does it make sense to have this fixed or is the cdp problematic going forward ?
Any ideas what the cost is to fix something like this

Replies appreciated

Contact John Tucker. He seems to be a reasonable man.

It could be dust accumulated on the laser lens.

Or a bum disc drive motor.

Or the laser really could be weak.  They vary widely but some have a life of about 2,000 hours.  About the same as a good quality diamond stylus on clean records.  Only way to really tell is with a laser power meter, which costs enough that I don't have one.

Sounds like a dirty or failed laser.  Not overly expensive to replace and align if you can get them to reply.

Maybe he meant, "DAC" or Digital-Analog Converter.

But a bad D-A converter should not affect disc detection or tracking.  It should only mean that a disc will play but the digital data stream won't be decoded and converted to analog audio.

Gene is correct (as usual) and his explanation exactly mirrors my experience.  I can't believe Exemplar isn't supporting that player and is ignoring your emails- I would think everyone is scrambling to make any money even if just on service.

And if it IS a bad D-A converter, an external one should work!

But on yours, since a disc isn't being detected, I doubt the D-A converter diagnosis.

Maybe "MAC" means something else, but I can't figure out what.

Have you opened up the unit and wiped the laser lens with a damp cotton swab?  While you are in there, look for dust or debris on the disc drive hub and the disc hold-down, too.  If a big enough piece of dirt gets in there, it can cause sufficient disc wobble to cause misreading to the point of disc initiation failure.

If that does not work and you can access the bottom of the disc drive motor, try squirting some contact cleaner such as DeOxit® into the slots usually found there.  Might just be enough to clean dirt and debris off the commutator of the motor.

I still think a worn out, off-spec laser pickup is the problem.

There are three listings for Denon DVD-2900 replacement laser pickups on the SPANISH edition of the infamous auction site.  If you cannot read Spanish sufficiently to use the site, (it works the same as any other-language version), or German well enough to read the description (the seller is apparently in Germany), Google Translate is your friend.

USUAL DISCLAIMER: I know nothing about these particular items or about the sellers.

AND there is a Wikihifi page with the instructions on how to do the replacement on a stock Denon DV-2900:

USUAL DISCLAIMER: I know nothing about the reliability of these instructions or skill set of the author, and assume no responsibility if following the instructions results in a thoroughly discombooberated player.   And DO NOT FORGET to remove the factory-installed ESD protective solder bridge, as mentioned in Step 8.

Not too sure about those ebay adds
Anybody else know where I can source a replacement laser for Denon 2900 ?

I don't really want to send it back to John Tucker the shipping alone may become cost prohibitive
If I can get a hold of a laser I would attempt to repair it myself

Well... it's not as simple as bolting a new one in.  Let me see if one of my close friends know what that drive is all about.  Be patient, I may be able to help if you can source a laser.
