We had a guy here today who measures NF and HF radiation.
You would not believe what happens around us.
It is crazy and my bones tell me the same.

As a person who knows zilch about that computer music stuff I would like some technical explanations:

- why these transformers, what do they do? I once connected the headphone output (of a portable CD player) to the input of an amp, and it worked also...

- what is the transmission ratio, and is it 'up' or 'down' towards the amp?

- and quite important, where does one get such nice gadgets?

Greetings,

Hi Hansrudolf.
Very good questions - and I have almost no answers.
I know Beyer from many applications, mainly as microphone transformers.
Some make very good MC-transformers.
I guess those have a very low ratio but couldn´t find out which it was.
I bought them off eBay.
As soon as I have more information, I´ll let you know.
Best wishes

Hansrudolf.
Far from being a technician, I thought about your question.
Well, I believe I could hook up the Mac directly to my amp and that would be indeed interesting to try - in order to compare.
As others do - David, Doug etc - they use another DAC with better specs, resolution and sound before the amp.
In this case the transformer act as a kind of input transformer. Sometimes this is used with CD players to smooth the sound.
I´ve been using old WE repeater coils with my CD player for a while. And it does sound indeed different, not necessarily better.
In that case the ratio was 1:1 and I suspect, here too.
Best wishes

Chris, this transformer has a 1:10 turns ratio

digit 1 = 3 -> studio grade transformer
digit 2&3 = 52 -> solder lug mounting, leads at both ends
digit 4 = 0 -> single primary winding
digit 5&6 = 10 -> turns ratio
digit 7,8,9 = ??? -> type number

I have some pdf's about Beyer trafo's if you'd like.

Wout.
You are a wizard  wink
Thanks a lot.
Yes, I´d love the pdf´s since I also look for a couple of MC transformers which should also be very nice.

Another way I have set a few people up with is to use an original xbox modified to run xbox media centre.

It supports all audio formats, internet streaming, standard def video, photos, local disk and LAN playback.
The standard 10gb HDD can be upgraded to any size for more storage space.

If you live in the UK, or know how to use a proxy wink then you can play video and radio from the bbc iplayer.

They are very cheap to buy now and can support HD with a component cable.
Fairly quiet in use too, and can be made quieter by replacing the standard fan.

Yep thats the method, I used a xbox to usb cable and an old flash drive for the memory card.

Once you have that and a copy of splinter cell you can softmod as many xbox's as you like.

If anyone needs one modded or just some help pm me
