The idler wheel that I got with a flea market L78 was really noisy. At first I thought was the bronze bushing. It was probably run for a very long time without any lubrication at all, and I thought that the idler wheel is beyond repair. But it turned out that most of the noise is there because of the brown resin washers. They started making a sort of a very soft griding noise as soon as they weren't completely covered in oil.

I had a sheet of 1mm PFTE lying around, and used a set of punches to make PFTE washers:

There's much less noise now, and also noticeably less vibration is transmitted down the idler arm.

That's good!

I have been thinking of those brown washers myself as not having a too smooth surface.

The washer at the clip end also has one surface to the clip. The clip itself is not that good as a bearing surface. My washer seems to rotate with the idler wheel. My thought is that it should be better if it didn't do that.

Here we go: this one goes over the axis and has the same diameter than the idler wheel shaft:

One side effect of using PFTE washers is that one can put the clip on much tighter than with resin washers. In my Mono Monster Lenco idler wheel's ability to move a little bit on the shaft caused some speed fluctuations (~0.1 rpm). With a wheel tightly clipped between the slippery washers the instability is gone.

I guess with a correctly aligned idler (mine's way off) the fluctuations wouldn't be there in the first place...

At first I thought of something like this, but it looked like too much work...

Mmmmh.
No, that was my spare one.
I bought a couple of them today.
But I could buy a whole lot for everybody and send them out step by step.
It´s a bit funny, since it only costs about 90 cents but maybe we could do that?
Cheers
