Having previously been looking at the GAS Sleeping Beauty http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=8086.0 I changed tack slightly and picked up this

It's the Coral 777E low output moving coil (upon which the Sleeping Beauty was based) and came with the original instruction leaflet

(There's a higher resolution copy in Vinyl Engine)

Are far as sound is concerned - I'm really enjoying this cartridge cheesy cheesy

Being a sucker for punishment I have now bought another Coral 777 - this time it's the EX at a total cost of £5.30 including postage.

Bargain I hear you splutter into your tea/coffee/beer or other beverage of choice ........ but (and there is always a but).

So what have I received?
The original cardboard box in good condition.
The cartridge presentation case.
Original paperwork including a measurement/performance chart from Bruel & Kjoer of Copenhagen
A stylus guard (I didn't have one of those)
So what's wrong with this picture?

Where's the cantilever?

Don't laugh, but I just sent Ropie a Grado with a stylus that looked somewhat similar.    toothy10 toothy10 toothy10

Only thing is, his cost £5.30 less...

I suppose the box, the lovely clear-plastic presentation case, the paperwork and the stylus guard are worth £5.30.  But
what's in the middle of the normally-hollow cantilever?  Did someone already try to fix this one by
grafting on a cantilever, using a cactus thorn as a "splint?"

Piero, I'm happy   smiley I knew it was damaged and only bought it for the packaging to complete the other cartridge.

I have connected it, jiggled what's left of the cantilever, and we had noise!  As this one is not dead, it may be a candidate for a new cantilever and stylus one day.

I'm not sure what all that brown stuff is, but it surrounds the generator and stub remains of the cantilever.

I know full well the lot of the ebay hunter - my 2nd hand MC phono stage was an ebay bargain, but volume is down on the right channel  cry

Luckily the manufacturer has agreed to check it out, so it will be going to him this week.

In May I sent my Coral 777E to Expert Stylus for a health check (Ropie now has the broken 777EX).

Expert said the cartridge is in surprisingly good condition for it's age, but the tip was badly worn   sad

So, after an extended stay in deepest Surrey the cartridge has returned sporting a Paratrace tip  grin

When Expert gave permission to post their Stylus Care notes   http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=9897.0

Wyndham Hodgson was kind enough to say "The auditioning of your cartridge was very good indeed bearing in mind the age, it compared with cartridges costing well over £500.00." -  ropies_wow  now that's a result!

Photo's will follow when photobucket stops generating an error message every time I try to load up a picture.

I'm enjoying the SAE variant of this cartridge,  apart form needing a bit more gain into a MM stage ( HOMC )  it really is great. grin

OK, photo's now available.

Expert returned the Coral in a very nice "jewellers box"

I may have to send them my busted GAS Sleeping Beauty for a new cantilever and tip. I've been holding off as I also have a NOS one (the elliptical version). Maybe I need to give it a spin.

These are very sweet sounding, yet very detailed sounding cartridges. Like the GAS Sleeping Beauty versions, nude styli are standard, mounted on thin wall aluminum cantilevers. Perhaps, these are some of the best sounding vintage "sleepers" still around. They are off the general audiophile collector radar; so not too pricey, yet...

Are the vintage Adcom mc carts with similar bodies also using the same internal generator ?

I've had a few Corals. They do sound very pleasant. Somewhat reminiscent of the better Ortofon MCs of the time.

You should check out the speaker drive units Coral were making in the seventies. They were fabulous!
